Giving Thanks, to turkeys?

Alas! Calamity! Halloween deadlines held up my marathon of daily sketches and I've been having a rest from the blog for a while. I'll pick up the sketching thread again soon though. In the meantime here's another editorial illustration from the regular bimonthly series I draw for ANA's inflight magazine Wingspan. This will be in the next issue and focuses on the annual French Turkey Festival (Fete de la Dinde), held in the town of Licques in December.

I'm a vegetarian myself, the last time I ate turkey was so long ago I don't even remember what it tastes like, so my appreciation of the bird is purely for it's looks. Nevertheless I dedicate this post to all my lovely friends in the US celebrating Thanksgiving (another celebration I've never experienced!)

A Drawing a Day #38

Circumstances prevented me from posting sketches this last weekend, but here's something for today though!

A Drawing a Day #35

A spot of self-indulgency, though I suppose all these drawings are self-indulgent really! Anyway, it was something to dab at while watching TV. I first went to Japan because I was interested in Ukiyo-e, perhaps this indicates a little of that old fascination.

A Drawing a Day #32

Something a little different in tone! I'm working on a couple of books at the moment, one of them a new edition of Jack and the Beanstalk for a Japanese publisher. The ogre in the final book will be altogether lighter in tone, more in the Fairy Tale tradition, but while pushing pen around paper I couldn't help scribbling this cheerful chappie just for fun.

A Drawing a Day #28

This is one of those kind of doodles you can leave at any point and come back later to finish. Perhaps it's a subconscious compulsion, but for me there's something immensely satisfying in drawing lots and lots of squiggly spirals.

A Drawing a Day #26

I thought of this after a double-take glance at a photo of an actual tree. At passing glance the tree really did look like it was covered in green birds, but look again and it was just leaves after all. Double takes are a good source for images - you seize on what you thought you saw as the basis for an idea.

A Drawing a Day #25

A surprisingly wintery image considering we're having an unseasonably hot Autumn. Perhaps the physical heat is making me dream of cooler climes.

A Drawing a Day #24

Excursion on a boat that needs no water. But where it's going I can't say.

A Drawing a Day #23

Drawn on a train journey. Unfortunately not one of the other passengers.

A Drawing a Day #22

This developed from a series of random strokes on a page, a few scribbled lines, then see what I could do with them.

A Drawing a Day #18

One face in a page of simple goblin doodles. I wasn't so happy with the others but this had a certain something.

A Drawing a Day #17

I don't have a wild overgrown garden to play in, but if I did this is the kind of thing I'd be looking for.

A Drawing a Day #14

This is a typical instance of no planning, no concept, it simply grew as it progressed.

A Drawing a Day #13

Is this a wedding or something else?
I'm not sure, but remember, not all weddings have to be white.

A Drawing a Day #12

I started this as a ship with cloud sails, but as often happens in my sketchbook it just grew, and grew.

A Drawing a Day #11

This was the result of a strange dream, I only remember it because I woke up. What other hidden images could be hidden in the subconscious? From now on I'm going to bed cuddled up with a sketchbook and pen. Is there no escape for the scribbler?

A Drawing a Day #9

This kind of suggests the kind of turmoil my house is in at the moment. Or maybe it's just my brain.

A Drawing a Day #7

Why Princesses you may ask? Well, my 8 year old daughter might have something to do with it, though she claims she no longer likes princesses!

A Drawing a Day #6

A muse mood. Not sure where this came from, I think it fell out of the pen.

A Drawing a Day #4

This was inspired by the jumble of city life in London. Much as I love harmony of environment, I also love some chaos, places where streets and architecture don't quite fit together well. My current location is slower paced, though no less jumbled with centuries of buildings jostling on ancient medieval streets.
